Lincoln was able to lead the country successfully in a position of great power, even when there was pressure and hardship. President Lincoln is the best president because he was decisive, kindhearted, and trustworthy. Decisiveness is essential for a great leader because they must know what they want to do, and then they must confidently act on it. One example where Lincoln showed decisiveness is his decision to hold Fort Sumter, and later his decision to declare war. One day after President Lincoln took office, he received a message from Major Robert Anderson, commander of the troops at Fort Sumter. Lincoln was informed that the troops were running low on supplies, such as ammunition and food. Lincoln had to decide whether to order the troops to stay, or to give up the Fort to the Confederacy by leaving and coming back to the Union. He asked his cabinet for advice, and even though there were conflicting opinions, Lincoln did what he thought was best . Lincoln decided that he would continue to have the troops hold the fort. He would try to get supplies to them by sending an unarmed boats to Fort Sumter. The boats were unarmed so that if the Confederate troops attacked, they would look aggressive an d violent. It was a chilly, blustery midnight in October. The phone ring was getting louder, signalling the witching hour eventually came. The autumn wind was forcefully blowing against the glass window as if it was attempting to break the window to see what was inside a dark silent room. In the dark room, I was uncontrollably thinking of the movie The Neon Demon which I’d just watched. My brain was ceaselessly working, visualizing each scene to find its definite explanation. I admit watching The Neon Demon isn’t an easy task since the movie itself doesn’t aim to entertain people. Rather, it pushes viewers in a position where they must respond to what they have visually witnessed. Enhance productivity One reason why teams may perform automatically at a high level is that if members are well-matched. Their strengths enhance their motivation, accuracy and productivity. â€Å"The structure of work group or team provides many of the factors that are central to the motivation of individuals† (Sinclair,1992, p. 620). When each member is allowed to contribute his or her own blend of conviction, beliefs, experience and strengths, the total outcomes are positive and beneficial to all involved. Just imagine if one person in the team is very creative. This would lead the process of coming up with ideas; another one is detailed-oriented who can do the initial research. The third person, who is good at graphic software, can pull all those skills together to end up with a much better result than an individual’s performance. As people work in a team, they allow the combining their skills and talents with others to create new approaches to solving problems. As a result, the work performance through teams will lead to higher productivity level than an individual’s hard work. One example of this is how Kodak uses team work to make work more productive. In 1990’s, a cross-functional team became a part of Chrysler’s new auto design team. This team consisted of marketing, design, engineering and manufacturing personnel. With the creation of this new team, Chrysler was able to cut more than a year from design-to-manufacture time, yet produced what outside experts rate as the highest quality vehicle Chrysler has produced (Sashkin, 1994, p. 0). The example shows that a diverse team is more efficient if team members can contribute their strengthens and work well together. Upgrade Job Skill In addition to making a team more productive, improved individual knowledge and skill may generate high team performance levels automatically. â€Å"Utilising a team approach can enlarge and enrich the information, knowledge and power an individual possesses. Many groups are brought together with the assumption that each individual has some information that the others and the group will need. (Zaleznik Moment, 1964) For a common objective or task, individual team members can learn from other’s experience to extend their knowledge and make up their shortcomings. Based on the broader knowledge, their performance in the team could be developed which may give them more opportunities to expand their job scope horizontally or vertically. The job scope may expand horizontally by teaching some skills to someone. Job scope could be expanded vertically by becoming a leader in a team. To help a team reach a target successfully, a supervisor or leader is required in a team. A team leader may be appointed to guide the team activities, or the team members may have the opportunity to appoint a leader from the team. The appointed leader will have the chance to develop and utilize leadership skills, though, the appointed leader must try to see that â€Å"the group process is effective and that the work is, in fact getting done† (Lawler, 1986, p. 105). Therefore, high performance levels may be automatically achieved in a team if individuals advance their skills and knowledge. Without the team, individuals might be limited by the scope of their skill, knowledge and experience. High quality decision-making Better quality decision-making could be considered as a way to lead a team to perform at higher levels. â€Å"As more ideas are produced and alternatives are considered, the team gets closer to making decisions that are stronger† (De Janasz, et al. , p. 311). There are many people to contribute to the discussion, meaning more ideas. Consequently a decision could be made more accurate, and such a decision would generally be of better quality. The more decisions a team can make for the method/procedure while completing the task, the more the team will feel responsible for achieving success in something they â€Å"own†. Because it is then the property of team, the quality of the output may increase, as it is a direct reflection of the team and its members â€Å"(Lawler, 1992). Reason: teamwork does not happen automatically In most cases, teamwork is beneficial to business operation and problem solving. However, it cannot be said that teamwork happens perfectly and automatically. There are several factors that can cause a team to have lower performance levels. Loss of self-motivation Lack of self-motivation could be a major factor that prevents a team from performing at high levels automatically. The author believes that individual self-motivation is an essential requirement for high productivity, efficiency and quality organizational output. On the contrary, when a team member’s suggestion is rejected, he or she might think â€Å"they do not need my contribution, so I will not come up with new ideas any more. † Consequently, the individual’s motivation will be reduced and conflicts may arise. Since individual self-motivation and responsibility are reduced, he or she will not be able to share more information or even put more effort into the common task. For example, I used to work in a company that just started running a new system, as a team leader I had lots of experience in this system. I discovered the potential problems in running the new system, but when I put forward my suggestions to the manager, the ideas were rejected. After that, I did not give them any suggestions any more. As my self-motivation was destroyed, I left that job after 6 months. In this case, it is easier to discover that when individual needs and responsibilities are reduced, people will not be able to put in the same effort for the common task; the team can be affected by showing worse and worse performance. Lack of time control Another reason that a team can not perform automatically at high level is that people have different levels of time management skill. This means individual time management skill will not match automatically when they come together as a team. There is an old saying in business world, time is money. When there is a fire, it takes a longer time to find the cause of the fire when a whole team of firemen are assigned this task. It will be faster and more efficient to use one expert fire investigator. For instance, there is an urgent task which has to be done in a specific time. The team leader has to explain to the team members first, then announces the goal and deadline, and next, asks for solutions, followed by discussion of the solutions. In the end, an agreement is reached and action is taken. If any procedure takes a longer time, then the total task will not be completed on time. Or, people may waste a lot of time on disputes and lose sight of the deadline. If the task is only required to be fulfilled by an individual, then the time for announcement, discussion will be skipped. Plus, individuals can make decisions quicker than teams, especially if output from someone is not necessary to reach the objective. Therefore, lack of time management skill could be considered one of the major causes of a team cannot perform effectively automatically. Inappropriate use of the team approach Some jobs are not designed for teamwork. This is especially true for some individuals that have the expert knowledge necessary to be used in certain tasks. These jobs require independent work, without the existence of team dynamics. â€Å"One may be pressurized to adhere to lower production norms than they would like to avoid being ostracized† (Hick Gullett, 1985). They may not have the desire to put effort and time into achieving team goals, or they might have different perceptions of the work-pace and how the goal should be accomplished. Sometimes people may feel pressured to agree with team processes and decisions, that they do not agree with. In addition, not all individuals in the work force value intrinsic rewards and a sense of achievement. Neither do some value the prospect a team provides of learning and broadening skills† (Lawler, 1992). This normally happens in unskilled workers that do not expect self-fulfillment and growth. â€Å"Contrary to the view that routinzed and repetitive jobs lead to bor edom and job dissatisfaction, some workers find them suitable or even desirable† (Chung Ross, 1977,p. 119) To force these unskilled workers to participate in a team can put pressure on individual work together with other team members in planning or problem solving. It will easily create stress for them and cause conflicts within the team. Conflicts lead to miscommunication and misunderstandings which will have a negative effect on performance. Therefore, teams will not be performing at high level if the job does not need teamwork. Social Loafing Lack of responsibility could be one of the biggest destroyers for a high performance team. Since the focus of productivity shifts from the individual to the group, it is difficult to detect individual’s output for the group project or task. Some employees sometimes feel dragged down by poor or lazy team members and may find themselves doing a tremendous amount of work to compensate for weaker colleagues. In this â€Å"no winner no loser† situation, if no one takes responsibility for their own job or even doesn’t know what should be done, then the project will be delayed and teamwork performance will be affected by those â€Å"social loafer†. For instance, there was a product which our company needed to be delivered by the next working day in another city for a trade show, but the goods were not allocated to a specific person. As a result, everyone thought someone else would do it, but actually nobody delivered the item. The result is obvious that we complained about the delivery service and stopped using their delivery service after that. The example shows the common problems in teamwork and hence lack of responsibility is an issue in team work, which will affect team performance, and customer satisfaction. Discussion In most cases, high levels of team performance will not be achieved automatically. It depends largely on the motives and intentions of the individuals within the team. The author has identified that the major factors that lead to team ineffectiveness are: communication breakdowns leading to loss of confidence and decreased productivity, wasted resources and effort, ill-will/bad feelings/decreased in morale, failing to fix problems and improve processes, loss of focus on customers and profits, increased workplace conflict, increased job-related stress/workplace tension and setting s a poor example for the work force. However, â€Å"it’s important to realize that the development of effective working relationships among staff is a gradual process which requires considerable time and skill, this is not meant to discourage team members, but to help them realize that teams aren’t created overnight† (Francis, 1979 p. 261). A certain amount of frustration and conflict is normal. From study and researching, the author thinks orgiansations can improve team performance from these aspects. First of all, set a clear goal for the team assignment, which will be accepted and understood by all members. Clear goal will keep team focused, thus avoiding the divisive potential of political issues and individual agendas†(Larson etc. 1989). When individuals fully understand their responsibility in achieving the same end, a tremendous synergy will be created. Secondly, take advantage of effective communication that also will contribute to a high-performance team. â€Å"Many times, decisions take a long time to be reached due to communication bottlenecks, but in a team where communication is rapid and prompt, any delay that may arise is minimized† (Rees, 2001, p. 15). When team members communicate with one another by using words or actions, team members come closer together and resolve any misunderstanding in the group. Next, rewarding or punishing team members based on team performance can be a strategy to motivate teams to perform at a high level. â€Å"Rewards and punishments send a powerful message to organisational members. † (Robbins Barnwell, 2006, p. 417) In this way, the individual will pay more attention to their performance and value in the team. Team size must be determined with respect to both staffing requirements, derived from the size of the project task and teamwork requirements, derived from task complexity and uncertainty (Hoegl et al. , 2003 p. 281-302). In conclusion, better team performance is reachable. The way we put people and jobs together and define their roles and relationships is an important determinant in whether an organization is successful. † (Robbins Barnwell, 2006, p. 73) â€Å"The acceptance and success of a team approach is high dependent on abilities, attitudes, motivations, and social and physical environments required or designed by the individual’s concerned†(Dawson, 1996). Job design will become more and more important in the workplace for enhancing the motivation of the employees, which gives rise to high productivity and efficiency. Perhaps, different measures of effectiveness could be studied. Also various group design characteristics are more applicable in teams that have been functioning longer than in younger teams or groups that have been recently established. I am an honor roll student who received 8 academic awards in the year of 2012, which includes school Character Award of 2012. In addition to my scholastic achievements, I have participated in various school and city competition such as the Boston Science Fair and I got first place in that competition. I am also capable of being an honorable leader. I am trustworthy and responsible. If something is expected of me, I try my best to live up to the expectations and strive to do even better. During my years in high school, I have participated in many organizations and leadership programs such as the ELL Youth Advisory at Sociedad Latina, Chinese Immigrant Students Leadership (ChISL) and Youth Advisory Group at Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center). I was selected as a peer mentor in ChISL. With my leadership ability, my teammates and I made a short video clip and won the White House AAPI video contest called the â€Å"Champion of Changes†. It was amazing and the team got an opportunity to visit the White House. With my leadership skills, I think I will able to make huge contribution to National Honor Society. Moreover, I often volunteer to do service in my community. I have been doing volunteer work for Walk for Hunger since from 2011. Also I participate many times in school food bank, which school donates food to families who need help. It was a wonderful experience because I was able to help out my community in a positive way. I like to be there for people who are in need because it shows people that I am a caring and loving them. I believe the most important requirement for gaining membership at National Honor Society would be a student’s personality and character. First of all, I learned to maintain a positive attitude even after my failures. I came to the United States as a freshman in 2010. At that time, I really had hard time learning English and I didn’t do well on my exams. But I didn’t give up easily. Instead, I put more efforts on my weakness and I overcame the difficulty I had. Secondly, I learned how to take care of myself and how to initiate new relationship with others, as well as how to adjust myself in new environments. That is why I make a lot of friends in my community. I am also an enthusiastic person who would like to help and motive other students. I think I can be a good role model for other younger students. But in the most recent letter I have received, father informed me that you were interested in enlisting for the War. I feel obligated as your older brother to warn you against this. In the time I have been overseas yet to experience a moment of peace. The enlistment posters are all lies, the trenches are being drastically glorified. The trenches are not made for the faint of heart, or even the strongest men, in some places the water is so high it reaches my knees. The sight of some of these men is enough to bring a grown man to his knees, they are filth and blood covered messes. Nighttime is the worst, all you can hear is the constant enemy fire, and the screams of the wounded in No Mans land. Its never silent, and when you think that the fire has almost died down another bomb is fired. The other day we went over the top, the amount of living men left behind was stifling, I can still hear their scream s over the sound of bombs. I havent slept for more than a few hours over the past couple weeks. During the day, the work is grueling, I believe I am starting to develop a case of trench foot from standing in water all day long. Even without the water, my feet are constantly in pain. As the war drags on, the food rations are becoming increasingly smaller, all the men are cranky from lack of food. The physical pain is nothing compared to the emotional wounds, but none of the men would be caught dead talking about their emotions. One man couldnt stop shaking, eventually the Generals were sick of his act and we have not seen him since. People wake up screaming, reliving the nightmares of battle takes its toll. Some of the men are taking their lives to escape the horrors, some try to run but are charged with desertion. Unfortunately, I dont believe the war will die out anytime soon, every side accumulates wins and losses at the same rate. I hope to be home soon, and I hope you consider m y words. I am the third born among from my mother. We have all lived in the same homestead since my father married his two wives. I have made several friends from different places, some of whom I have remained distant with while others remain very close despite geographical differences. My first genuine friend that I made was Noor, my stepmother’s child who is slightly younger than me. Before I joined a school, we could go out and play with Noor the whole day. Sometimes we went out even when we were told not to, this made us receive some punishment. However, we never relented in our engagements. In school, I meet several other pupils that I made friends with. In primary school, I had friends such as Shariff, Mustafa, and Khalif. I managed to make more friends from my neighbourhood, high school and now in a distant land of America.   I profess Muslim religion that emanates from the teachings that I received while still a very young person.

History of the Latin Kings The History of the Latin Kings begins in the 1920s or 1930s, but at this time they were known under a different name. In the beginning of the 20th century a lot of Puerto Rican immigrants came to New York. A lot of groups were formed, such as Noble Knights (who have ties to todays Latin Kings) or Young Lords. The group still has connections to these gangs. The founder of the original Latin Kings is called Papa King or Papa Santos. He started the gang in the 1950s in Chicago. Although he is an important person in the history of Latin Kings you dont know much about him or his life. Even his birthday is unknown. He himself was a Young Lord. Due to oral stories the LK were formed on the Southside of Chicago on the corner of 18th and Wabash. During the 60s they became more and more successful and expended to the north. They grew faster and were the best organized gang these days. The Latin Kings worked with social workers, because they received government benefits from meeting them. Thats why they acted more and more bad to get more and more benefits, such as money, fun activities, etc. Today this system doesnt exist anymore, of course. Some gangs thought the LK were part of the Royal Kings, who had arguments with the so called Ambrose. As a consequence the Latin Kings and Ambrose became enemies. In the 1970 the LKs were often connected with major crimes and organized criminal activities. 1977/78 they were suspected for robbing an armory. The FBI arrested one member, who acknowledged that they had stolen military weapons. It was rumored that they sold them to different allied gangs. In the 1980s the LK convinced also white gangs to join the so called people alliance, formed with Vice Lords and Elrukns. In 1888 Papa King was killed. His followers were Lord Gino (of whom you say that he ordered Papa Kinds death) as the leader of the LKN in prison and Baby king as leader on the streets. Size and Ethnic Origin Since the 1990s theyre also spread in New York City and nowadays you can find them nearly everywhere in the US. The Latin Kings and Queens Nation is primary spread in Illinois, Texas, and Florida and of course in New York and Chicago. Although they have many allies they are still the third largest gang in Chicago and people say that it is the biggest and most influential Latino gang in the world. Experts guess that there are about 50.00 to 80.000 members world wide, but youll never find out the exact number. They often have Puerto Rican background, but during the last 20 years when they broadened to Europe, there became more and more people with also Hispanic, Portuguese or Italian background members. As in many gangs there are more male members than female. Structure and Organization Both, men and women, are allowed to become a member at the Latin Kings and Queens Nation has, as the name already says. They have a strict hierarchy and rules. It has always been important that the members have social responsibilities. Depending on their age they should have or search for a job or go to school. Education in general is quite important to the Nation. Thats why there are so called schoolings. Knowledge workers are people whose jobs focus on working with information and for whom a certain theoretical and analytical knowledge is important. Knowledge is not tied to any country it is portable and represents might, a typical LK ambition. They should also be interested in their ethnic background and family history and free or hard drugs to be able to mainly concentrate on their duties in the nation and not to drag down the other members. There are three stages of social responsibilities a member goes threw when he decides to be a Latin King: Primitive Stage: the King warrior acts very impulsive. Most of his time he does gang banging (engaging gang activities) or getting high. The Conservative or Mummy Stage: The member doesnt want to be on the streets and gets tired of being seen as big and bad. He gets married and retires. The New King Stage: The member sees himself as a new King, which means that he starts to recognize that the time of revolution is in his hand. When he becomes a new King the will of the Nation becomes his will. Everything starts to have a meaning to him and he only lives for the nation. They are well structured and known for their hierarchy. The leadership consists for example out of: Supreme Crown Authorities Executive Crown Authorities and Local Presidents in their respective prisons and communities. They are responsible for a particular area. Furthermore there are officers or leaders, the so called Incas that are each supported by a Crown Council of seven members. The gangs head is the so called Corona which means Crown. He is able to decide nearly everything, but is, of course, also responsible for every activity outside prison. At that time Gino Gustavo Colon is the leader of the Latin Kings. Rules Because of their strict hierarchy they need, as mentioned before, strict rules. There are ones for every part of their live. They are written in their bible, which is called the Kings Manifesto. For example they have rules how to communicate with other gang members.. A few official rules are: A brother never crosses his left over his right arm, he never covers his right hand, because it represents his crown. No member should take the law into his own hand, he isnt allowed to exploit any person inside or outside the nation, when a member gives another member a salute it always has to be returned. That rules are often highly ritualistic. Due to that the Latin Kings are very religious. They believe in Kingism, which includes their whole system. But they also believe in Yahweh, god, the almighty father, King of all Kings. He is also called the El of the Universe. A non religious LK youll find very rarely. The Nation says that also their name is an acronym and shows their devotion to Yahweh. Almighty stands for: A love measured in great harmony toward Yahweh In their Manifesto there are not only rules and regulations, but also prayers. There are 2 prayers in the beginning; one is called the holy prayer. They believe that Yahweh is the founder of the universe, of the Manifesto and the Kingism. This belief should give them faith in themselves. The Latin Kings say that theres a heaven and a soul that will meet Yahweh after death. In fact it has a great similarity to the Christian and Jewish believe. What Kingism exactly is does only a member of the Latin Kings and Queens Nation know. They have certain Kings, but if they are holy, imaginary persons or real historic figures, isnt clear. Punishments When a member does not stick to that rules he gets punished by his colleagues. Besides physical punishment it includes social exclusion and group harming. Their application varies in intensity and frequency whether its a Chicago or New Yorker Leader. They have a few different rules and their execution also depends on the leader. A non-physical punishment can be prohibition, which varies between 2 weeks and 2 month. Others can be fines, being isolated and so on and so forth. But, as everything in their lives, they also have strict rules for physical punishments. There are: three-minute physicals, as the name already explains three members punish for three minutes five-point violations, which means that there are 5 members of the leadership that punish the victim (they stand for the 5 points of the crown) or even T.O.S. It stands for Terminate on Sight and is a death penalty. The reasons for this last brutal action are treason, challenging a leadership or sadly just homosexuality. Symbols and Rituals As every gang they have specific colors you find on all their logos and tattoos. In this case they are black and yellow. The dark color represents death and stands in opposite to the light one, which represents life. They arent only included in their symbols, but also on their cloth. Their emblem is always five pointed, e.g. a star, a crown (sometimes worn by a lion) or anything else that shows this number. Their most recent emblem is the bulldog with a crown. You can say that the number five is holy to them, because they often use it in their philosophy. The LKs are known for their drawings and graffiti paintings. They use symbols such as A.L.K.Q.N (Almighty Latin King Queen Nation), A.L.K.Q.C.N (Charter Nation), A.D.R (Amor Deu Rei Love the Kings), guns, Coat of arms, money or cars. They sign places with graffiti where a gang member has fallen. On the graffiti the deceased persons ID-Number is shown, his/her name and the date of the death. If another gang is responsible for his/her death an upside down symbol of this gang is painted with the words Lollypop as a putdown for that gang. A very important thing for them is to learn to control their tongue. They believe that speaking of the control of the tongue is addressing the whole body. Thats what they want to learn. For that reason its not easy for the police to uncover their criminal activities they are faithful to their colleagues. Newspapers talk about special rituals to train themselves. Criminal Activities The LKs are known for not just using but also selling weapons. High ranking members often wear bullet proof vests, because of their enemies. Every member owns a weapon and they do not always carry them with them when they are on post. Its very hard to get information from them, because they are that faithful to their group. However, their primary source of income is dealing with drugs, such as cocaine, heroin and marijuana. The internet is full of stories about Latin Kings and their criminal activities including burglary, homicide, identity theft and money laundering. Reportedly also the police are corrupted. In 2011 two policemen had arrested drug dealers for fake, took their drugs and gave their proceeds to the Latin Kings. Statistics of the Chicago Police say that they find about 150 kilograms cocaine and 1000 kilogram marijuana a year in the Latin Kings region. Their Rival Gangs are the Latin Locos, Folk Nation gangs and the Solidos. Latin Queens Originally there were no female members allowed. Nowadays women get an equal share. They constituted, in addition to the male Kings, a few Queens. They join the gang for self-respect, independence, family support, ethnic identity and self-empowerment. Still they fill in female stereotypical roles and stay at home, mainly running the household, while the male members are fighting on the streets or dealing with drugs. They have a home life of protection. Reason for Becoming a Gang Member As Ive mentioned before a lot of women became members to feel safer. But still the Latin Kings and Queens Nation has more male members. They have a lot of influence in the world and the black market. That would be the main reason why people become members. In New York or Chicago they are common and young people are attracted by their philosophy and might. They often come from broken families and want to find a new one. Besides this its youll have no choice weather you want to be a LK or not when your parents already join them. On the other hand these kids grew up with the ideology of Kingism. They do not know anything else. Thats why the Latin Kings grow that fast. Due to this life in poverty seems to be a lot easier when you can relate on your gang and know that theyll support you even in prison. And of course you always have access to drugs and weapons, what favors young people the most. My Opinion When I started searching for information about the Almighty Latin Kings and Queens Nation I thought they where just one out of thousand Latin American gangs. But when I researched more I found their philosophy really fascinating. Kingism is not a religion I would personally agree with but I found it strange that so many people follow that few leaders and that there is such a strict hierarchy although everybodys talking about freedom. I wasnt surprised about their criminal activities and the stories about street wars or corrupt policemen do not really shock me. I expected that. Another think that was interesting is that although the LKs are so popular and even have their leaders in prison it is very hard to find out information about them. I had to concentrate on facts, but most of the sources are influenced by the gang itself, which forced me to read even more about them to stay subjective. What Accounts for the Stability of the Tokugawa Regime?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In the first half of the Seventeenth century, the regime perfected by Ieyasu Tokugawa and his successors was based on the accepted system of daimyà ´ domains which Nobunaga and Hideyoshi had been developing prior to Ieyasu’s rule. It was thus basically feudal in structure, but it represented a highly organised and stable stage of feudalism, unlike Europe ever experienced. The reasons for the stability of such a regime are quite numerous, and demonstrate the bakufu government’s capability of maintaining a time of peace for the better part of two centuries. They maintained this peaceful era by the strict regulation of the other powers of Japan, and thus there own influence was an omnipresent force throughout the nation. After the battle of Sekigahara in 1600, by which Ieyasu’s total control of Japan was attained, in order to achieve quick stability, as stated, he made use of the thoroughly familiar Daimyà ´ System. Upon achieving this rapid yet superficial form of stability, he endeavoured to make various improvements so as to solidify the permanence of his own power, and subsequently Tokugawa rule in general. This first method which he adopted to secure his position was by the division of land post-Sekigahara. The shà ´gun reserved for themselves a huge realm consisting of a quarter of the agricultural land of the country, located largely around their Kanto headquarters in Edo and the old capital region around Kyoto, but also including all the major Japanese cities, ports and mines. The other three quarters of the land was divided between three types of daimyà ´. Firstly, there were the ‘related’ daimyà ´ which consisted of various branches of the Tokugawa family, most notably the three large domains of Wakayama, Mito and Nagoya. Then there were the many fudai (‘hereditary’) daimyà ´, who had been Ieyasu’s vassals pre 1600, with their rather small fiefs in central Japan. Finally there were the tozama, who, during the battle of Sekigahara, had either been Ieyasu’s enemies or powerful allies and still posed a threat to his rule. These tozama held relatively large fiefs at the western and northern ends of the islands, far form the strategically important central part of the country. Thus the Tokugawa coalition of shà ´gun, ‘related’ daimyà ´, and ‘hereditary’ daimyà ´ (both of which were loyal to the shà ´gun), held well over half the agricultural land and virtually all the central and most strategic regions, and so any potential threat to Tokugawa rule was minimised.
